(Lexington, Kentucky: August 2006) – A hospital-based clinical study investigating lower back pain, quality of sleep, and the impact a mattress might have on daytime symptoms, was recently completed. The study confirmed the intermediate findings researchers affiliated with the Yale University School of Medicine presented in 2005 to the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Physicians Annual Scientific Meeting.
The study was limited to individuals under physician’s care for chronic lower back pain. After the individuals began sleeping on Tempur-Pedic mattress and foundation, the data began trending towards an increased number of hours slept per night, reduction in lower back pain, reduction in "sleepiness" and significant improvement in both mental and physical health components.
The continuing research, referenced by the principle researcher as "a first pioneering study" supported these initial trends and strengthened many "gold standard" measures to statistical significance. These included improvement in physical well-being, vitality, social function and mental health.
In commenting on the draft manuscript, scheduled for submission to an impact sleep journal, Rick Fontaine, vice president for business development stated, "Ninety percent of the people in this study - each of them having a documented history of chronic, nagging lower back pain - reported that their quality of life was improved simply because they began sleeping on a Tempur-Pedic mattress and foundation.
